Walla Wines is situated 40
km North-West of Albury near Walla Walla. The nearby Billabong Creek
rises in the high country to the east in the Tumbarumba region and joins
the Murray hundreds of kilometres to the west, making it the longest
permanent creek in Australia. The Southwest Slopes of NSW has a dry
summer and is a major grazing and cereal production area. Many small
wineries are situated throughout this part of South Eastern Australia
and with their individual styles some very interesting, value for money
wines, are there to be discovered.
Walla Walla was settled over 125 years ago by families of Lutheran
settlers who came across from South Australia to settle. They purchased
the Walla Walla station and sub-divided it into farms. These settlers
and their heirs have developed a farming community and a town that is
extremely enterprising and productive. The farming is based on grazing
and winter cereal production but a great variety of innovative forms
of agriculture are practised. Not far from Walla Wines was a
15ha vineyard and winery which ceased production early last century.
In fact at that time Albury (40 km away) was a major wine producing
area in NSW. Walla Walla is also close to the famous Rutherglen wine
region and is on a direct route from Holbrook to Rutherglen and Melbourne.
Visitors to Walla Wines can also visit Morgan's Lookout, the
Zion Lutheran Church and Premier Yabbies at Culcairn, and, if travelling
through Holbrook, check out the great range of local boutique wines
at Simply Boutique.
